Hydra

About Hydra

Some people fall in love with Hydra at first sight. Cinephiles see the glamorous Sophia Loren emerge from the crystal clear waters in the famous black-and-white film “The Child and the Dolphin”. Music lovers everywhere hear the echo of Leonard Cohen’s warm voice. Also it is an island from where great figures of the Greek Revolution of 1821 came from.

In any case, this island has its own, fanatical, audience. For many decades, thousands of visitors have been coming from abroad especially for Hydra. Many of them have built houses and live on the island, which is proud of its famous inhabitants.

Cars are prohibited here and transportation is done exclusively on foot, donkeys and sea taxis.

The city of Hydra is located in the center of the island and is built amphitheatrically on the rocky slope, around the port, creating a unique harmony between architecture and environment.

On your first visit, a feeling of magic surrounds you. Maybe it is the unique architecture and picturesqueness of the island, maybe again it is its long and cultural heritage or maybe all together. The visitor who approaches it for the first time is impressed by the view of the tall and imposing Mansions that dominate the port of the city. To the right and left of the port entrance are the Bastions with the cannons that once protected the city.

You can walk on the waterfront, where the heart of the city beats, browse the tourist shops, admire the old mansions and visit the museums of Hydra. As well as you can climb the narrow cobbled streets and reach the oldest district of the city, the medieval settlement of Kiafa, to enjoy the view that reaches the Peloponnese.

The island is famous for its natural beauty, for the quiet life it offers to its visitors during the day, but also for the intense cosmopolitan life it offers at night. For your entertainment in Hydra you will find many restaurants, taverns, cafes and clubs with excellent service and a variety of products and services.

Beaches

The special beaches of Hydra do not have sand but pebbles and are landscapes of truly wild beauty. In only a few places are small sandy beaches formed.

For swimming in the city are offered the rocks of Spilia, Hydroneta, and a short distance from the city Avlaki, Kamini and the cosmopolitan Mandraki. The connection of the city with the other beautiful beaches of the island, Vlychos, Agios Nikolas, Bisti , is done only from the sea.

Vlychos beach is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds. There are refreshments and coffee snacks as the picturesque taverns prepare your meal with fresh fish and Mediterranean cuisine.

Bisti is a pine-covered area with a turquoise beach. The beach is organized and offers incredible beauty and tranquility. The green dominates, both from the pines that surround it and from the waters that have a special blue-green color. In addition, the place is suitable for diving from the rocks, snorkeling.

Right next to Bisti is the small beach of Agios Georgios. Above the beach is the church from which the beach was named.

Saint Nicholas is a large beautiful bay with blue waters. The beach is organized. It is located at the southern tip of Hydra and its name was given by the homonymous church of Agios Nikolaos, which is located up there in a prominent position. It has fine pebbles but a part of the beach is sandy.
