Mykonos

About Mykonos

Mykonos is the island of entertainment, cosmopolitan life and one of the most popular destinations in Cyclades. Its white alleys, its blooming bougainvilleas and its magical sunsets make even the most demanding traveler succumb to its beauty.

Chora is the capital and the center of Mykonos. In Chora you will find many cafes, bars and restaurants where you can enjoy your drink, coffee and gourmet flavors. Despite the great tourist development of the island, Mykonos has managed to maintain traditional elements of the Cycladic physiognomy.

The design of the houses and the cobbled alleys give an island aroma. The Cycladic windmills and the countless bell towers of the churches compose the image of Mykonos. Finally, in the old port of the island, the moored boats complete its enchanting image.

Matogiannia in Chora is one of the most famous markets of Mykonos. Here we find shops with branded clothes, ornate jewelry and art objects.

The most famous part of Chora is called Little Venice. It is a picturesque neighborhood with wonderful architecture, colorful balconies, windows and doors, that literally get wet by the wave and give the neighborhood a smell of the famous Italian city. Originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century to grind wheat and now the windmills of Mykonos in Little Venice are the trademark of the island.

One of the best things to do in Little Venice is to sit on a restaurant terrace and watch the sunset. In the evening, like the rest of Mykonos, Little Venice becomes a place for parties, with bars that turn into nightclubs.

The Church of Paraportiani is located in Chora and is the most photographed church of Mykonos. It is a complex of five churches, with four of them forming the base of the building and the fifth being a dome. The white walls of the church come in a particularly interesting contrast with the intense blue of the sky and the sea.

Ano Mera is the second traditional settlement of the island in size after Chora and is 8 km away from it. It is a beautiful settlement that strongly holds the Cycladic element and offers beautiful images to the visitor. It is worth taking a walk in the alleys and having lunch in the traditional taverns. You will try homemade local recipes and enjoy the warm hospitality of the locals. In Ano Mera is the historic monastery of Panagia Tourliani, founded in the 15th century and which you should not miss to visit.

Finally, lovers of history and the sun will surely love the excursion to the nearby island of Delos. Unesco has recognized Delos as a part of world heritage and the island is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean.

Beaches

Unique feature of Mykonos and one of its incomparable assets are its beaches. There are countless different compositions of golden sand, pebbles and crystalline, turquoise waters under the unique Aegean Sun. Especially in the southern part, the picturesque coves with the beautiful sandy beaches follow each other. Whether one prefers the noisy crowds or the calm and the sound of the wave and the wind, Mykonos has a variety of options for all situations.

Agios Stefanos is one of the most popular beaches of Mykonos and has a unique view of the island of Delos. With its beautiful and windless sandy beach combined with its services, this beach is suitable for all tastes, of all ages. At the left end of the beach is the old church of Agios Stefanos, while nearby you can find several beach restaurants, cafes, mini markets and more.

Ornos is one of the busiest beaches of the island located in the southwestern part. It is a windless beach and is an ideal anchorage for yachts. It has a significant number of restaurants and bars offering services from the early hours of the morning until late at night. Among them is a diving school for lovers of the seabed.

Psarou is undoubtedly the most cosmopolitan beach of Mykonos and the favorite beach of celebrities from all over the world, who come to Mykonos to enjoy the sun, the sea and the parties. It is one of the most beautiful beaches of Mykonos, very close to Chora and is fully organized, with umbrellas and sunbeds, water sports and all kinds of comfort imaginable. The very fine and almost white sand, its clear emerald waters, the imposing Cycladic landscape, create a perfect backdrop of relaxation and calm. An extra advantage is the fact that the coast is fully protected from the winds.

Platis Gialos is one relatively large, very touristy beach with beautiful sand, in the southern part of the island.

Paraga beach is located in a very beautiful natural environment, at a distance of five kilometers south of Chora and is fully organized. Although relatively small in size, its clear blue waters and almost white sand make it stand out among the beaches of Mykonos and that is why it has fanatical visitors.

Paradise beach is a beautiful and busy beach, famous since the time of the “hippies”. It has a large sandy beach with coarse sand and is also located in the southern part of the island. It is known for the events that take place from noon until the early morning hours in the beach bars of the beach, which have turned it into a global attraction.

Super Paradise is in the same climate as Paradise. It gained fame from the parties and events that are organized on the sand and made it one of the most frequent destinations for the young public. There you meet lots of people, intense rhythms and eccentricity in its grandeur.

Elia in Mykonos is one of the most popular beaches on the island and gathers in its crystal clear waters and especially in its luxurious sunbeds many of the celebrities who spend their holidays there. It has fine, golden sand and turquoise waters, tempting for a swim in the beautiful sea.

Kalo Livadi is one beautiful, large and very popular beach of the southern part. It is located between Elia and Kalafati and is one of the largest beaches on the island in length and width.

The beach of Kalafatis has been awarded with “Blue Flag” and is the favorite hangout of those who love water sports. Windsurfing is very popular here, as the pan-European Freestyle Windsurf competitions are often organized. Fun, relaxation, all water sports, good food compose a beach that combines everything. A characteristic feature of the beach is that there are several trees, the typical tamarisk trees, which offer natural coolness.

Ftelia is a northern beach in the bay of Panormos with amazing waters and sand. It is the most ideal beach for Windsurf and Kitesurf. From the west side of the beach the whole landscape looks like a lagoon, especially when there is no wind. It is organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, showers and beach bar. However, it also has a lot of free space, as the organized parts are essentially its two ends.

Agios Sostis is a large, sandy beach, one of the most beautiful in Mykonos, in the northern part of the island. It is the only famous beach without umbrellas, sunbeds and services on the beach and maintains a climate of freedom and carefree.
